Term Description

This panel includes the individual terms for reporting whether or not a viable microorganism is present in a patient specimen based on different culture methods. A single specimen may be split among one or more types of culture devices (e.g., aerobic and anaerobic bottles), depending on the clinical context. The results for the terms in this panel are typically exchanged between laboratory devices and/or stored within the laboratory information system (LIS/LIMS). This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, the bioMerieux BacT culture bottles for the recovery and detection of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) from body fluid specimens.

Part Descriptions

LP6209-3   Culture
A culture is a laboratory procedure where a sample of tissue or fluid from a patient is placed in or on growth media (agar, broth) to induce the proliferation of potentially infectious agents (bacteria, fungi, viruses). The presence of growth is documented and the organisms are identified to determine whether or not a pathogen is present.
Once a pathogen is identified, specific testing techniques can be used to determine drug susceptibilities for assistance in treatment. https://courses.lumenlearning.com/boundless-microbiology/chapter/culturing-bacteria/ Source: Regenstrief LOINC

LP7238-1   Body fld
The LOINC "Body fld" System represents body fluids other than serum, plasma, blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid. When a LOINC term with the System "Body fld" is used, the specific specimen source or body fluid type should be reported elsewhere with the result. Where more specific terms for pleural, peritoneal, synovial fluid, etc. exist, we encourage you to use the more specific terms. In contrast to "Body fld", the System "Asp" in LOINC represents the fluid withdrawn during an aspiration procedure from an abnormal collection of fluid, such as from an abscess or cyst. "Asp" is used for abnormal fluid collections that are aspirated, while "Body fld" is used for named body fluids, such as synovial fluid or peritoneal fluid, that are not inherently pathologic.
