This term is used for assays that detect but do not differentiate between BK virus and JC virus. A positive result should be followed up by further testing to determine which virus is present in the specimen.

BK and JC virus are two human polyomaviruses, which are small, non-enveloped DNA viruses. Primary infection is common in childhood and is usually asymptomatic or presents as an upper respiratory infection; seroconversion for BK and JC virus occurring in half of children by ages 3-4 and 10-15, respectively. Both viruses can be transmitted via various routes, including blood, respiratory, fecal-oral, organ transplant, and across the placenta. After primary infection, the viruses have a latent stage, from which they can reactivate, primarily in immunocompromised hosts. BK reactivation is associated with nephropathy, ureteral stenosis, and hemorrhagic cystitis. JC reactivation is associated with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). PMID: 24119828 The JC virus, which stands for John Cunningham, should not be confused with Jamestown Canyon virus, which is sometimes abbreviated the same way, or Creutzfeld-Jakob disease.
