Part Description
LP18317-5 Hepatitis E virus
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a small, non-enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus. There are four major HEV genotypes (genotypes 1 to 4) that comprise a single serotype. Genotypes 1, 2 and 4 are associated with widespread outbreaks and are found in Asia and Africa, Mexico and west Africa, and Taiwan and China, respectively. Genotype 3 is the cause of isolated cases in developed countries. HEV infection targets the liver and is usually a self-limited, acute illness in immunocompetent patients, however, patients with solid organ transplants who are infected with HEV may develop chronic hepatitis. In developing countries, the most common source of HEV is fecally-contaminated drinking water. In developed countries, sporadic cases of HEV genotype 3 have occurred following consumption of uncooked or undercooked pork or deer meat and consumption of shellfish; zoonotic spread is possible though not common. As of 2015, there is no FDA-approved vaccine for HEV in the U.S., but a recombinant vaccine was recently approved for use in China. [CDC: hepatitis/hev/hevfaq.htm]
