Veterinary Medicine:
Bovine Müllerian inhibiting substance (BMIS) is a dimeric glycoprotein that belongs to the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-B) family of growth and differentiation factors. BMIS is produced by the Sertoli cells in males and causes regression of Mullerian ducts and continued development of the Wolffian ducts, which produce the vas deferens and epididymis. In the absence of BMIS, the Mullerian ducts would form a uterus and oviducts. In healthy female cattle, BMIS is produced by the granulosa cells of growing ovarian follicles and is an indicator of the total number of ovarian follicles and oocytes. The level of BMIS in female cattle rises in the first few months of life and begins to decline until puberty. When BMIS is not present, follicles mature at a much faster rate, which depletes the supply of follicles at an early age. BMIS levels are associated with higher pregnancy rate, herd longevity, and response to superovulation and may be a valuable biomarker for fertility in cattle.
