Term Description

This panel includes three terms for different analytes produced by Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) enzyme activity. Levels of the three analytes indicate the level of the patient's TPMT activity, which has clinical implications for the use of thiopurine drugs PMID: 23962279. These tests only indicate the TMPT activity phenotype, not the genotype.

Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) is an enzyme that catalyzes the S-methylation of thiopurine drugs including 6-mercatptopurine, thioguanine, and azathioprine (AZA). These drugs are used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and organ transplant rejection. Patients with low or absent TPMT activity are at increased risk for toxicity due to increased accumulation of unmetabolised drug. Information from Current Clinical Pharmacology. 2006;1:119-128.
