92786-3 Corynebacterium sp DNA [Presence] by NAA with probe detection in Positive blood culture
Part Descriptions
LP30498-7 Corynebacterium sp
Corynebacteria are catalase producing, gram positive bacilli or coccobacilli. In the past, the non-diphtherial corynebacteria were believed to be contaminants in cultures, but now are recognized as the cause of significant disease, especially as opportunistic infections in patients who are immunocompromised, who have prosthetic devices, or who spend extended periods of time in nursing homes or hospitals. The most significant species of Corynebacterium is C diphtheria which is the bacteria that causes diphtheria. Diphtheria has been eradicated from most developed countries due to the implementation of universal vaccination against the primary virulence factor of diphtheria which is the diphtheria toxin (DT). There are 88 species of Corynebacterium, 53 of which cause occasional or extremely rare disease in humans or are transmitted by zoonotic exposure. The remaining species have only been found in animals, birds, the environment, water, food, or synthetic material. They have numerous metabolic properties including being fermentative, oxidative, assimilative, or nonreactive. Corynebacterium can be identified by biochemical strips that compare chemical reactions to the chemical reactions of known organisms. Other methods used to identify Corynebacterium include using gene sequencing and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF). PMID: 22837327

LP343401-8 Cutibacterium acnes
Cutibacterium acnes (formerly known as Propionibacterium acnes), a slow-growing Gram-positive biofilm-forming rod implicated in acne vulgaris, is part of the normal flora of human skin, conjunctiva, oral cavity and large intestines. Although frequently thought to be a culture contaminant, it has been implicated in cases of endocarditis, endopthalmitis, intravascular infections, central nervous system infections and arthritis. It is increasingly recognized for its role in implant-associated infections, where diagnosis is challenging due to its fastidious nature and slow growth PMID: 29125405.

LP16648-5 Enterococcus sp
A genus of gram-positive, coccoid bacteria consisting of organisms causing variable hemolysis that are normal flora of the intestinal tract. Previously thought to be a member of the genus Streptococcus, it is now recognized as a separate genus.
Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
LP16648-5 Enterococcus sp
Enterococcus is a genus of lactic acid bacteria of the phylum Firmicutes. Enterococci are Gram-positive cocci that often occur in pairs (diplococci) or short chains, and are difficult to distinguish from streptococci on physical characteristics alone. Two species are common commensal organisms in the intestines of humans: E. faecalis (90-95%) and E. faecium (5-10%). Rare clusters of infections occur with other species, including E. casseliflavus, E. gallinarum, and E. raffinosus.
Important clinical infections caused by Enterococcus include urinary tract infections, bacteremia, bacterial endocarditis, diverticulitis, and meningitis.Sensitive strains of these bacteria can be treated with ampicillin and vancomycin.
From a medical standpoint, an important feature of this genus is the high level of intrinsic antibiotic resistance. Some enterococci are intrinsically resistant to β-lactam-based antibiotics (penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems), as well as many aminoglycosides. In the last two decades, particularly virulent strains of Enterococcus that are resistant to vancomycin (vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus, or VRE) have emerged in nosocomial infections of hospitalized patients, especially in the US. Other developed countries, such as the UK, have been spared this epidemic, and, in 2005, Singapore managed to halt an epidemic of VRE.[citation needed] VRE may be treated with quinupristin/dalfopristin (Synercid) with response rates of approximately 70%. Tigecycline has also been shown to have anti-enterococcal activity as has rifampicin.
Enterococcal meningitis is a rare complication of neurosurgery. It often requires treatment with intravenous or intrathecal vancomycin, yet it is debatable as to whether its use has any impact on outcome: the removal of any neurological devices is a crucial part of the management of these infections. New epidemiological evidence has shown that enterococci are major infectious agent in chronic bacterial prostatitis. Enterococci are able to form biofilm in the prostate gland making their eradication difficult.

Part Descriptions
LP102526-3 Enterococcus faecalis
Enterococcus faecalis and faecium are Gram-positive commensal bacteria of the gastrointestinal tract. Although part of the normal intestinal flora, Enterococcus species are increasingly recognized as important pathogens and a common cause of nosocomial infections. E. faecalis and E. faecium account for the vast majority of infections in humans, which can include urinary tract infections, endocarditis, bacteremia, wounds infections, intraabdominal and pelvic infections. Enterococci can show both intrinsic and acquired resistance to antibiotics including penicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracyclines, rifampin, fluoroquinolones, aminoglycosides and vancomycin. E. faecium is responsible for the majority of vancomycin-resistant enterococcal (VRE) infections. The virulence of the Enterococci is generally considered lower than S. aureus. However, because these infections often occur in debilitated patients, the mortality can be as high as 50% [https://emedicine.medscape.com/article/216993-overview]

92781-4 Lactobacillus sp DNA [Presence] by NAA with probe detection in Positive blood culture
Part Descriptions
LP21192-7 Lactobacillus sp
Lactobacillus is a genus of Gram-positive facultative anaerobic or microaerophilic bacteria. They are a major part of the lactic acid bacteria group, named as such because most of its members convert lactose and other sugars to lactic acid. They are common and usually benign. In humans they are present in the vagina and the gastrointestinal tract, where they are symbiotic and make up a small portion of the gut flora. Many species are prominent in decaying plant material. The production of lactic acid makes its environment acidic, which inhibits the growth of some harmful bacteria.

92778-0 Staphylococcus sp DNA [Presence] by NAA with probe detection in Positive blood culture
Part Descriptions
LP19642-5 Staphylococcus sp
Staphylococci, members of the family Micrococcaceae, are Gram-positive cocci that grow in irregular grape-like clusters. Traditionally, Staphylococci are divided into two groups: coagulase-positive and coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS). The coagulase-positive group includes the well-known pathogen S. aureus, whereas the coagulase-negative group includes a number of species that are known commensals on skin. It is clear that even the CoNS are true pathogens, especially in patients with indwelling devices, and given their prevalence, are common causes of bacteremia. S. aureus is known for causing a number of superficial skin infections (boils, furuncles, impetigo, etc), but it can also cause more serious infections, especially in immunosuppressed patients including pneumonia, deep abscesses, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, and meningitis. Multiple antibiotic resistance is increasingly common in both S. aureus and CoNS, with the emergence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) able to reach epidemic levels. 92777-2 Staphylococcus aureus DNA [Presence] by NAA with probe detection in Positive blood culture
Part Descriptions
LP16662-6 Staphylococcus aureus
Potentially pathogenic bacteria found in nasal membranes, skin, hair follicles, and perineum of warm-blooded animals. They may cause a wide range of infections and intoxications.
Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
LP16662-6 Staphylococcus aureus
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are cocci-shaped gram-positive bacteria that assemble in grape-like clusters and cause a wide variety of infections. Up to 50% of adults carry S. aureus on their skin or in their mucous membranes. It is highly adaptable, resulting in drug resistant strains: methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), methicillin-susceptbile S. aureus (MSSA), vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA) and vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA). Examples of human infections caused by S. aureus: bacteremia, gastroenteritis, infective endocarditis, meningitis, osteomyelitis, pulmonary infections, septic arthritis, skin and soft tissue infections, toxic shock syndrome, and urinary tract infections. Diagnosis of S. aureus infection may vary by infection site, e.g., clinical signs and symptoms for skin infections, blood or tissue cultures for other infection types. People with chronic health conditions, weakened immune systems or IV drug users are at a greater risk, as are patients in intensive care units (ICUs) and those with a history of certain types of surgeries and patients with implanted medical devices. Part Descriptions
LP102548-7 Staphylococcus epidermidis
Staphylococcus epidermidis, a coagulase negative staphylococcus (CoNS), has been historically viewed as an innocuous commensal organism of human skin. However, it has emerged as an important nosocomial opportunistic pathogen and accounts for up to 90% of all hospital-acquired CoNS infections. S. epidermidis is able to form biofilms on indwelling devices, and isolates are often resistant to a multitude of antibiotics which complicates effective treatment. PMID: 24222452

92775-6 Staphylococcus lugdunensis DNA [Presence] by NAA with probe detection in Positive blood culture
Part Descriptions
LP183769-1 Staphylococcus lugdunensis
Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative, Gram-positive bacterium and a component of normal human skin flora. However, since the 1990s, this organism has been increasingly implicated in a wide range of severe infections, including osteoarticular infections, bacteremia, foreign body infections, and endocarditis. This information, taken together with its proven ability to produce a number of virulence factors, places S. lugdunensis in the category of emerging pathogen. Unlike many fellow coagulase-negative staphylococci, it is susceptible to a wide range of antimicrobials PMID: 28835477.

Part Descriptions
LP14405-2 Streptococcus agalactiae
Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) or Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a gram-positive coccus that causes serious diseases, primarily in neonates, pregnant patients, elderly patients and those with significant underlying diseases. S. agalactiae typically presents as skin and soft tissue infections; while meningitis and endocarditis are rare presentations, they are marked with serious morbidity and mortality. Blood cultures confirm S. agalactiae presence. Chronic kidney disease, cardiac failure, history of neoplasia, history of ischemic heart disease, and diabetes mellitus are risks for acquiring agressive S. agalactiae infection.

92771-5 Streptococcus pneumoniae DNA [Presence] by NAA with probe detection in Positive blood culture
Part Descriptions
LP14410-2 Streptococcus pneumoniae
Streptococcus pneumoniae are gram-positive cocci that are nonmotile and nonsporulating and usually require complex culture media. Older streptococcal cultures, beyond the most active growth period (the logarithmic phase), sometimes lose their gram-positive staining characteristics. S. pneumoniae are part of the normal respiratory tract flora. Disease usually results due to the acquisition of a new strain following a change in the normal flora, often due to a preceding virus. S. pneumonaie causes otitis media, sinusitis and pneumonia in the middle ear, sinuses or lungs, respectively. Meningitis can occur by bloodstream invasion from the lungs or by extension of otitis media or sinusitis to the meninges. Bacteremia can result in osteomyelitis (infection of bones) or arthritis (of joints). Most bacterial pneumonia occurring after the neonatal period is caused by S. pneumoniae. Pneumococcal pneumonia is seen most commonly in elderly or immunosuppressed individuals. In the United States, it is most prevalent in winter. Diagnosis is usually based on a sputum Gram stain and culture although blood or cerebrospinal fluid may be cultured. While penicillin has been the standard treatment, some strains have proven resistant to penicillin and multiple antibiotics. A vaccine exists. [NCBI Books:NBK7611]

Part Descriptions
LP17149-3 Listeria sp
Listeria are gram-positive, non-spore forming, intracellular, facultative anaerobic bacilli that cause outbreaks of foodborne disease across the world. It is broadly present in plants, soil, and surface water, but has also been found in silage, sewage, slaughterhouse waste, milk of normal and mastitic cows, and human and animal feces. Listeria has also been identified in cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry. The majority of outbreaks of infections in humans are caused by Listeria monocytogenes. Most infections by Listeria sp occur in patients with pre-disposing conditions including neoplastic disease, immunosuppression, pregnancy, extreme age, diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, cardiovascular and renal collagen diseases, and hemodialysis failure. The Listeria serovars 1/2a, 1/2b, and 4 are those most often associated with infection by Listeria. PMID: 1943998

48814-8 Vancomycin resistance vanA gene [Presence] by Molecular method
Part Descriptions
LP63185-0 Bacterial vancomycin resistance vanA gene
This test is used for the detection of vancomycin resistance genes by multiplex PCR. Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic used to treat various infections, primarily those caused by gram-positive bacteria. Vancomycin resistance genes were first found in enterococci, and more recently have been found in Staphylococcus aureus. The emergence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) in hospitalized patients has lead to a restricted use of vancomycin. To date, multiple vancomycin resistance genes have been characterized, including: vanA, vanB, vanC (vanC-1, vanC-2, vanC-3), and VanD. Of the six van types, vanA and vanB are the most resistant to vancomycin, and are the two types that cause VRSA. PMID: 24983424

86621-0 Methicillin resistance mecC gene [Presence] by Molecular method
Term Description
Detection of the mecC gene in methicillin-resistant bacteria, specifically methicillin-resistant staphyloccus aureus (MRSA), in various clinical specimens.
Source: Regenstrief LOINC
Part Descriptions
LP249928-5 Bacterial methicillin resistance mecC gene
The mecC gene, a homologue of mecA, is found in bacterial cells and enable bacteria to be resistant to antibiotics such as oxacillin. The gene is carried on a mobile genetic element called the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec), which integrates at an open reading frame (orfX) in the bacterial genome. Detection of the gene in clinical specimens suggests the presence of methicillin-resistant bacteria, primarily Staphylococcus aureaus (MRSA). The prevalence of mecC MRSA is currently low but varies geographically where in some regions its presence is increasing. PMID: 24331435
