Term Description
The detection of methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus species (MSSA) in isolates or clinical specimens, such as nasal/throat, wound, groin and perineum swabs. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the Bosch Vivalytic MRSA assay, a multiplex real-time PCR used for the detection MRSA/SA infections in healthcare settings.

Methicillin resistance in S. aureus is primarily mediated by the mecA gene which is carried on a mobile genetic element called the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec), which integrates at an open reading frame in the S. aureus genome known as orfX.
