Term Description

The maximum clot strength in the presence of arachidonic acid, as measured by the amplitude of resonance of the blood meniscus as the blood sample clots. In this test, thrombin activity is blocked, and arachidonic acid (AA) is used to activate platelets in order to measure the clot strength based on platelet activation by AA, which result is used to determine the relative contribution of AA-induced platelet activation [LOINC: 94579-0] to the overall clot strength [LOINC: 91125-5]. This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, the Submitter's test kit, the TEG6s PlateletMapping ADP & AA Assay Cartridge for heparinized blood.

Resonance thromboelastography is similar to traditional thromboelastography (TEG) in that it is used to measure the viscoelastic properties of a clot. In TEG, whole blood is added to a cup in which a pin is suspended, the cup is rotated, and as the clot forms, the rotational force is transferred to the pin. The movement of the pin is transformed into a tracing, from which the clotting parameters are derived. In resonance thromboelastography, there is no pin, but rather the cup is vibrated, and the movement of the blood meniscus, which changes as the blood clots, is recorded and translated into clotting parameters.
