DOPamine [Mass/volume] in Plasma --supine
Active
Term Description
The goal of the postural panels is to find out if the adrenal gland is sensing the posture change and secreting increased levels of catecholamines appropriately during the transition from supine to standing. This can help to diagnose syndromes of inherited and acquired autonomic dysfunction or autonomic neuropathies which may show insufficient release of catecholamines. On the other end of the spectrum are pheochromocytomas and various neuroectodermal tumors which exhibit unregulated release of one or more catecholamines.
Part Descriptions
LP15543-9 DOPamine
Dopamine, a chemical naturally produced in the body, functions in the brain as a neurotransmitter, activating dopamine receptors. It is also a neurohormone released by the hypothalamus. As a hormone, it inhibits the release of prolactin from the anterior lobe of the pituitary. Dopamine can also be supplied as a medication to target the sympathetic nervous system, leading to increased heart rate and blood pressure. Because dopamine cannot cross the blood-brain barrier, however, when given as a drug it does not directly affect the central nervous system. To increase the amount of dopamine in the brains of patients with diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Dopa-Responsive Dystonia, a synthetic precursor to dopamine such as L-DOPA can be given, since this will cross the blood-brain barrier.

LP15543-9 DOPamine
Dopamine is a member of the catecholamine (Neurotransmitters) family in the brain, and is a precursor to epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline). Dopamine is synthesized in the body (mainly by nervous tissue and adrenal glands) first by the hydration of the amino acid tyrosine to DOPA by tyrosine hydroxylase and then by the decarboxylation of DOPA by aromatic-L-amino-acid decarboxylase.
