Part Description

LP21116-6   Coccidioides sp
Coccidioidomycosis, also known as Valley Fever, is caused by two species of soil-dwelling fungi, Coccidioides immitis and C. posadasii. It is common in the southwestern United States, Mexico, and South America and is transmitted by inhalation, frequently after contaminated soil is disrupted, such as by construction or natural events such as earthquakes or dust storms. Infections range from asymptomatic to life-threatening, and the clinical presentation is the same for both species. In about 40% of patients, symptoms begin one to three weeks after exposure and include cough, shortness of breath, headache, fatigue, and rash. Up to 10% of patients develop pulmonary complications or chronic disease, and about one percent of patients develop disseminated infection involving meninges (i.e., meningitis), soft tissues, and bones or joints. Patients who are immunocompromised are more likely to develop more severe disease. [CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/fungal/diseases/coccidioidomycosis/health-professionals.html] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
