Cache Valley virus (CVV), a mosquito-borne member of the Bunyamwera serogroup, family Bunyaviridae, genus Orthobunyavirus, is geographically widespread in North America, where it circulates between mosquitoes and mammals. Human cases are rare, and occur from late spring through early fall. CVV can cause meningitis and encephalitis, and symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting, and rash. Hosts include deer, cattle, horses and sheep.

Cache Valley virus (CVV) was isolated in Cache Valley, Utah, in 1956. CVV is a mosquito borne member of the Bunyamwera serogroup belonging to the family Peribunyaviridae, genus Orthobunyavirus [NCBI Taxonomy: 80935] [CDC:cache-valley/healthcare-providers/index.html]. The primary vectors are unknown; however CVV has been isolated in multiple mosquito species including Anopheles, Culiseta, Coquillettidia, Aedes , and most commonly Anopheles quadrimaculatus PMID: 16704854 [CDC: cache-valley/healthcare-providers/index.html]. CVV is neuroinvasive and rarely diagnosed in North America PMID: 16704854. Symptoms produced can be life threatening and include fever, encephalitis, or meningitis PMID: 25962774.
