Clade nomenclatures aim at providing a broad-brush categorization of globally circulating diversity of SARS-CoV-2. PMID: 32794443 One example of a Clade nomenclature is the based on year followed by a letter (Nextstrain.org). These are meant to be major groupings and not intended to completely specify genetic diversity.
