Giardia sp [Presence] in Water by Immunofluorescence
Active
Term Description
Giardia oocysts and cysts are identified in water through immunofluorescence, where they are characterized by size, shape, and fluorescence and then counted. The US Environmental Protection Agency has published guidelines for processing a water sample for testing (https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2015-07/documents/epa-1623.pdf). This process starts with filtering a water sample to remove solids, then elutes the material and centrifuges the elute to pellet the oocysts and cysts. These are then removed from other materials in the sample and stained with fluorescent antibodies for analysis.
