Term Description
The patient's sex for clinical use (SFCU) is a category that is based upon clinical observations typically associated with the designation of male and female. The categorization may be useful in the case of a given procedure or clinical context (e.g. scoring algorithm, hormone level, organ inventory). The SFCU categories include Female, Male, Specified and Unknown. "Specified" means the patient has specific documented characteristics that do not fully match either male or female in a given context. It is used to indicate that a patient has specified conditions that are likely important when considering clinical observations, particularly those that are impacted by sex-associated conditions. When specified conditions are unavailable, default considerations should be followed. "Unknown" means the SFCU can not be determined because there are no observations or the observations are not sufficient to determine a value. For example, an emergency trauma case may require treatment before SFCU can be established. This term was created based on the SFCU concept proposed by the HL7 Gender Harmony project within the Vocabulary Work Group.[https://confluence.hl7.org/display/VOC/The+Gender+Harmony+Project]
