Transcutaneous O2 monitor
Active
Description
Transcutaneous O2 monitor measures partial pressure of oxygen (usually in mmHg) at the skin surface via an electrode. The devices usually include a heating coil to increase the blood flow beneath the skin (sometimes called transcutaneous oximetry). It assesses oxygenation of the skin at the edge of wounds, in limbs with suspected or diagnosed peripheral vascular disease and in neonates and anesthetized patients. One device may include both O2 and CO2 measurements. It should be distinguished from pulse oximetry which measures oxygen saturation in arterial blood as it surges into capillaries.
