Bacterial vancomycin resistance vanA+vanB genes
Active
Description
This test is used for the detection of vancomycin resistance genes by multiplex PCR. Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic used to treat various infections, primarily those caused by gram-positive bacteria. Vancomycin resistance genes were first found in enterococci, and more recently have been found in Staphylococcus aureus. The emergence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) in hospitalized patients has lead to a restricted use of vancomycin. To date, multiple vancomycin resistance genes have been characterized, including: vanA, vanB, vanC (vanC-1, vanC-2, vanC-3), and VanD. Of the six van types, vanA and vanB are the most resistant to vancomycin, and are the two types that cause VRSA. PMID: 24983424 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
