Version 2.78

Description

Heat-labile enterotoxins are proteins produced by strains of Escherichi coli (EC), Vibrio cholerae (VC), and Clostridium perfringens (CP) that cause diarrhea. EC and VC enterotoxins consist of five B subunits and one A subunit. The B subunits bind to a ganglioside receptor on the membranes of the intestinal epithelial cells. After binding to the intestinal epithelium, subunit A is transferred to the epithelial cytoplasm where it becomes activated. Once activated, subunit A causes a series of reactions that lead to the secretion of large quantities of ions and fluid to be secreted from the cell, resulting in diarrhea.
