Description

The blood group Scianna antigens are located on the glycoprotein human erythroblast membrane protein (HERMAP) which is encoded by the erythrocyte membrane-associate protein (ERMAP). The antigens that make up the Scianna blood group are Sc1, Sc2, Sc3 and Sc4 (Radin). Sc1 and Sc3 phenotype are present in very high numbers in northern European populations (99%) while Sc2 and Sc4 phenotype are present in very low frequencies for the same population group (1%). The Scianna antigens are found on erythrocytes with a decreased expression on leukocytes, thymus, lymph nodes, spleen, fetal liver and adult bone marrow.(https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/projects/gv/mhc/xslcgi.cgi?cmd=bgmut/systems_info&system=scianna) Because the prevalence of antibodies to Scianna antigens is so low it is uncertain that they could be associated with either hemolytic transfusion reactions or hemolytic disease of the fetus or newborn. Anti-Sc3 has been found in patients with the rare Scianna-null phenotype which is Sc1, Sc2 and Sc3 negative. ( AABB Technical Manual, 18th edition, p354) Source: Regenstrief LOINC
