Version 2.77

Description

Aspergillus fumigatus is an opportunistic fungus causing allergic and invasive aspergillosis in humans and animals. It is unusual compared to other allergen sources in that it is both a primary and an opportunistic pathogen, as well as an important major allergen. Its conidia production is prolific, so humans are continually inhaling its ubiquitous spores. The result is that exposure of the respiratory tract is almost constant. However, inhalation rarely causes adverse effects, as the conidia are usually eliminated efficiently by the innate immune system. But increasing use of immunosuppressive therapy has resulted in increasingly frequent conditions involving infection by A fumigatus. Copyright Copyright © 2006 Phadia AB.
