Description

Giardia lamblia, or Giardia intestinalis, is a pear-shaped flagellated parasitic protozoa that attaches to the intestinal epithelium and feeds on mucous secretions. The organism is often non-pathogenic and found in completely asymptomatic individuals. Individuals with giardiasis, a colonization of the G. lamblia in the small intestines, can develop diarrhea and abdominal pain, occasionally vomiting and fever. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
