Description

Gossypol is a dimeric sesquiterpene isolated from the seed, roots, leaves and stem of the cotton plant (Gossypium sp.). It exists as both protein-bound and free forms. The free form of gossypol is toxic. In the plant, the toxic form is a natural defense against predators, causing infertility in insects. In animals and man, daily ingestion of gossypol provokes infertility. In men, it is used as a contraceptive and causes spermatogenesis arrest at relatively low doses. PMID: 12020773

Veterinary Medicine:
Cottonseed meal, a by-product of cotton, is used for animal feeding because it is rich in oil and proteins. Due to the toxicity of gossypol, cottonseed use is limited in animal feed. Food and animal agricultural industries must manage cottonseed meal levels to avoid toxicity. High concentrations of free gossypol most commonly cause impairment of male and female reproduction. Toxicity can also lead to respiratory distress, impaired body weight gain, anorexia, apathy, and even death after several days. PMID: 24895646 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
