Description

Nitric oxide is converted to nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-), which are inorganic ions that occur naturally in the soil, water and some foods. Testing for nitrate/nitrite levels (NOx) is performed to monitor exposure and toxicity. Acute acquired methemoglobinemia is a major health condition caused by high nitrate or nitrite exposure. Infants less than 4 months of age are especially prone to acute acquired methemoglobinemia when exposed to high levels of nitrate or nitrite levels.(CDC, ATSDR, Toxic Substances Portal - Nitrates and Nitrites, 2013) Source: Regenstrief LOINC, Nitrate and Nitrite
