| Article | Regenstrief LOINC | The Barmah Forest virus (BFV) is an enveloped positive sense single stranded RNA virus. It is endemic in all states and territories of Australia. Infection rates are highest in coastal areas where transmission of BFV to humans occurs most frequently by the mosquito Ochlerotatus (Aedes) vigilax. Peak infection rates occur between February and April and are influenced by rainfall, humidity, temperature, and flooding. After a 3 to 11 day incubation period clinical symptoms can begin to manifest and include arthralgia, myalgia, lethargy, and rash.
