Description

Lipophages are macrophages that contains an abundance of small lipid vacuoles that completely fill the cytoplasm. The lipid vacuoles are thought to originate from 1) extracellular fatty material or 2) membranes of ingested cells. Lipophages in CSF may be due to cerebral infarcts, chemotherapy injections, or post-irradiation. Lipophages in pleural fluid may be associated with chylothorax or extensive cell membrane destruction.
