Version 2.80

Description

Siderophages, also known as erythrophages, are macrophages that have taken up erythrocytes by phagocytosis. The siderophages convert hemoglobin iron from the ingested erythrocytes to hemosiderin, a coarsely granular iron-protein complex. The presence of siderophages in CSF indicates hemorrhage into the fluid prior to sample collection. They have a prolonged life span, remaining in the fluid up to four months.
