Version 2.77

Description

A genus of parasitic flagellated protozoans with four anterior flagellae, an undulating membrane, and a trailing flagellum. The clinically relevant species, Trichomonas vaginalis, causes a sexually transmitted disease that is more commonly symptomatic in females. Infection with T. vaginalis can increase susceptibility to HIV infection. There are only 2 species found in humans: Trichomonas vaginalis, a pathogen generally living inside the human urinogenital tract, and Trichomonas tenax, an organism found in the oral cavity of humans, cats, and dogs.
