Description

Myelin is a modified plasma membrane that is wrapped in a spiral around the nerve axon creating a sheath.[https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK27954/] The myelin sheath is comprised of abundant amounts of lipids and proteins and functions to insulate and protect the axon, and speed up nerve signal transmission. Myelin covers the axons in both the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The myelin in CNS is produced by the oligodendrocytes and the myelin in the PNS is produced by the Schwann cells. In multiple sclerosis, a disease where myelin is lost or damaged, only the CNS myelin is affected. The two types are myelin are chemically distinct but accomplish the same goal to promote efficient signal transmission and protect the axon. In multiple sclerosis, the immune system attacks the myelin sheath in the CNS, damaging it and the oligodendrocytes that produce it. The resulting lesions and scars are detectable on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), causing nerve impulses to slow down or stop completely, and leading to the symptoms of MS.[https://www.nationalmssociety.org/What-is-MS/Definition-of-MS/Myelin] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
