Description

Cystoisospora belli (formerly known as Isospora belli) is a coccidian protozoan parasite which causes cystoisosporiasis (formerly known as isosporiasis), an intestinal disease of humans. It is found worldwide, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Humans acquire infection occurs by ingesting sporocysts-containing oocysts which infect epithelial cells of the small intestine and then multiply asexually. Fertilization results in the development of oocysts that are excreted in the stool. The main symptom is acute, nonbloody diarrhea with crampy abdominal pain which can last for weeks and may result in malabsorption and weight loss. Immunodepressed patients as well as infants and children may have severe diarrhea. Unlike in other protozoan infections, eosinophilia may be present.
