Description

Triacylglycerol lipase (also known as triglycerol lipase) is an enzyme produced by the pancreas in order to break down dietary fats into fatty acids. The triacylglycerol lipase travels from the pancreatic duct to the duodenum where it hydrolyzes triglycerides. Triacylglycerol levels in the blood are measured to monitor pancreatic function. Elevated levels of triacylglycerol lipase indicate a pancreatic disorder or pancreatic damage, including pancreatic duct obstruction, pancreatic cancer, gall bladder inflammation, or kidney disease. A decreased level of triacylglycerol lipase in the blood can indicate the malfunctioning of the lipase-producing cells in the pancreas. [Lab Tests Online:lipase/tab/test] Lipase levels in peritoneal dialysis fluid can help determine the etiology of abdominal peritonitis. Patients with peritonitis due to pancreatitis have significantly higher levels of lipase in peritoneal dialysis fluid compared to patients without pancreatitis.
