Description

Hepcidin is a peptide hormone primarily synthesized in the liver and essential in regulating dietary iron absorption and distribution. Hepcidin lowers iron concentrations by counteracting the function of ferroportin, a major cellular iron exporter. Hepcidin forms include preprohormone (84 amino acids), prohormone (60 amino acids), and hormone (25 amino acids). Twenty- and 22-amino acid forms of Hepcidin also exist in the urine. The 25 amino acid form is referred to as the "bioactive" hepcidin since it can block the iron transporter ferroportin. The N terminal region is required for function and deletion of 5 N-terminal peptides results in a loss of function. Deficiency in hepcidin-25 concentration is associated with iron loading in hereditary hemochromatosis and thalassemia's. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
