Description
Somatotropin binding protein, also known as growth hormone binding protein (GHBP), binds to growth hormone (GH) and functions to increase the half-life of GH by restricting its distribution and preventing its decay. GHBP levels are low in the developing fetus, but increase in the several years after birth to adult levels. There are two forms of GHBP described as low-affinity GHBP and high-affinity GHBP. Both forms bind to growth hormone; 5% of circulating GH is bound to low-affinity GHBP and 45% is bound to high-affinity GHBP. There are several congenital and acquired conditions with altered GHBP levels including Laron-type dwarfism, pygmy dwarfism, malnutrition, obesity, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis, and renal insufficiency. The most clinically relevant use of GHBP measurements is to confirm suspected Laron dwarfism (where GHBP is absent) or carrier status (GHBP is low). PMID: 7509216 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
