Version 2.78

Description

Methaqualone is a quinazoline derivative with sedative-hypnotic properties. It was used as a treatment of insomnia, as a sedative, and a muscle relaxant. Due to its high potential for abuse, it has been taken off the market in many countries, including the United States. In parts of Africa and India, smoking methaqualone has become a significant public health issue. Methaqualone is similar to barbiturates in that it induces euphoria, sedation and loss of inhibition. This drug functions by binding to GABA receptors in the central nervous system and increasing the amount of inhibitory signals in the brain. Methaqualoneit can be detected during a blood or urine drug test. [PubChem:methaqualone] PMID: 15846700 PMID: 96460 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
