Version 2.78

Descriptions

ATP:pyruvate 2-O-phosphotransferase. A phosphotransferase that catalyzes reversibly the phosphorylation of pyruvate to phosphoenolpyruvate in the presence of ATP. It has four isozymes (L, R, M1, and M2). Deficiency of the enzyme results in hemolytic anemia. EC 2.7.1.40. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006

Pyruvate Kinase deficiency, although rare, is the erythrocyte enzyme deficiency most frequently found to be a cause of congenital nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia. Patients usually present early in childhood with anemia, icterus, and splenomegaly. Hemolytic disease of the newborn is common in persons with PK deficiency. Source: Regenstrief Institute
