Cefpodoxime
Active
Description
Cefpodoxime is a third generation beta-lactam antibiotic that belongs to the cephalosporin Family of antibiotics. Its mode of action is to bind to penicillin binding proteins (PBPs) that are located on the outer membrane of the bacterium. When cefpodoxime binds to the PBPs, it interferes with the activity of transpeptidase enzymes which prevents the formation of peptidoglycan chains. Without the peptidoglycan chains, the bacterial septum and cell wall cannot be produced during cell division, which in turn affects the rigidity of the cell wall and leads to cell lysis. Cefpodoxime is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and is used to treat acute tuberculosis, otitis media, pharyngitis, and sinusitis.[PubChem: 6335986] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
