cefTAZidime
Active
Description
Ceftazidime is a third generation beta-lactam antibiotic that belongs to the cephalosporin Family of antibiotics. Its mode of action is to bind to penicillin binding proteins (PBPs) that are located on the outer membrane of the bacterium. When ceftazidime binds to the PBPs, it interferes with the activity of transpeptidase enzymes which prevents the formation of peptidoglycan chains. Without the peptidoglycan chains, the bacterial septum and cell wall cannot be produced during cell division, which in turn affects the rigidity of the cell wall and leads to cell lysis. Ceftazidime is more effective against both Gram-negative bacteria and less effective against Gram-positive bacteria than first and second generation cephalosporins. Ceftazidime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used frequently to treat Pseudomonas and other Gram-negative infections.[PubChem: 133687818] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
