Description
The measurement of alpha hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase activity has been used as cardiac specific marker in various ways over time (including perioperatively) to detect myocardial infarction, either alone or in combination with CK-MB. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in serum has 5 isoenzymes, those with faster electrophoretic mobility having a higher proportion of the H-subunit prevalent in cardiac tissue. The faster cardiac LDH isoforms (e.g. LDH1) also have a greater catalytic activity to reduce alpha ketobutyrate known as "alpha hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase activity".
