Round cells
Active
Description
The cells called 'round cells' in semen and prostatic fluid are mostly comprised of white blood cells and immature spermatogenic cells. These 2 cell types are difficult to distinguish by conventional microscopy. According to the WHO manual of semen analysis, if the round cell estimate in semen exceeds 1 x 10^6 / ml, they should be further analyzed to distinguish origin and type. This may include peroxidase stain or other leukocyte markers, as elevated numbers of WBCs could indicate infection or inflammation. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
