3-epi-25-Hydroxyvitamin D3
Active
Description
25-Hydroxyvitamin D is routinely measured by LC-MS/MS; a technology that fractionates 25-hydroxyvitamin D into 25-hydroxyvitamin D2 and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3. Each of these matabolites can be further fractionated into their 3"-epimers. It was reported in 2006 that 3-epi-25-Hydroxyvitamin D can be present in clinically significant amounts in very young children. It was further reported in 2012 that adults also can have significant 3-epi-25-OH Vitamin D in their serum. Because the physiological activity of the 3' epimer is likely less than that of 25-hydroxyvitaminD3, it some believe it is important to measure it. Enhanced HPLC-MS/MS separation can be used to fractionate all four 25-hydroxyvitamin D metaboliltes: 25-OH-D2, 25-OH-D3, 3-epi-OH-D2 and 3-epi-OH-D3. Source: LOINC partner 1
