Descriptions

A nonapeptide posterior pituitary hormone that causes uterine contractions and stimulates milk ejection. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006

Oxytocin is a neurohypophysial hormone that plays a role in sexual reproduction, particularly during labor to facilitate birth and after birth for maternal bonding and to stimulate breastfeeding. Recent studies investigate oxytocin's role in various behaviors, including social recognition, pair bonding, anxiety, and maternal behaviors. Testing for oxytocin levels is may be performed on serum, plasma, urine, and other biological fluid, including saliva. Due to oxytocin's pulsatile release, it is difficult for plasma and urine sampling to capture rapidly changing patterns of oxytocin concentration. Saliva testing in some cases provides a more reliable measurement, which allows for a better understanding of the factors regulating oxytocin release. Source: Regenstrief LOINC , PMID:19365797
