Phosphatidylcholine.saturated
Active
Description
Disaturated phosphatidylcholine (DSPC) is the main component of pulmonary surfactant. Disaturated phosphatidylcholine is formed from phosphatidylcholine plus two saturated fatty acids, usually palmitate. The level of DSPC in amniotic fluid is a marker of fetal lung maturity, and the amount of DSPC in amniotic fluid increases significantly during the second half of the third trimester of pregnancy. The amniotic fluid DSPC level has been shown to be a more reliable predictor of infant respiratory distress syndrome compared to the lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio.
