Version 2.77

Description

Thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, is an essential nutrient obtained from food. Thiamine is highest in meat, legumes, whole grains, and nuts, whereas some foods, including coffee, tea, and raw fish, contain thiamine-destroying enzymes. Deficiency occurs as a result of inadequate dietary intake, poor absorption, increased loss, and increased utilization. Deficiency is highest in areas where processed grains are primary food sources and in patients with chronic alcohol abuse. Thiamine deficiency can lead to cardiovascular, nervous, and immune system disorders. Thiamine is supplemented via oral, parenteral, subcutaneous, or intramuscular methods. PMID: 30725889 IgE-mediated immune reactions to supplemented thiamine are rare but can be serious. Case reports of anaphylactic reactions, including death, have been reported.
