Version 2.77

Description

Clonazepam is a powerful benzodiazepine that was originally prescribed to treat seizure disorders but has increasingly been used to treat mood disorders including panic disorder and depression. Clonazepam has been used to accelerate the response of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) fluoxetine, fluvoxamine and sertraline and for treatment-resistant and prolonged depression. Extended use of clonazepam with SSRIs helps prevent the recurrence of depression. Clonazepam more effectively treats unipolar than bipolar depression. Its mode of action is believed to be associated with the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system. PMID: 19330803 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
