Levorphanol is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain. The medication has a known abuse potential. In addition to acting on opioid receptors, it also acts on NMDA receptors. Typical doses include 2 mg by mouth or subcutaneous injection every 6 to 8 hours. It is related to dextromethorphan, an antitussive which is not an opioid. Dextromethorphan is a salt of the methyl ether dextrorotatory isomer of levorphanol. Copyright Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License.
