Salicylates
Active
Descriptions
The salts and esters of salicylic acid are known as salicylates. Salicylic acid is known for its ability to ease aches and pains and reduce fevers. It produces its anti-inflammatory effects via suppressing the activity of cyclooxygenase (COX), an enzyme which is responsible for the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as the prostaglandins. In addition to anti-inflammatory effects, it is probably best known for its use in anti-acne treatments. As with other beta hydroxy acids, salicylic acid is a key ingredient in many skin-care products for the treatment of acne as well as Seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis, calluses, corns, keratosis pilaris, and warts.
