Descriptions

An adrenergic beta-antagonist that is used in the treatment of life-threatening arrhythmias. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006

Sotalol (brand names Betapace and Sorine) is used to treat irregular heartbeats. Sotalol is in a class of medications called antiarrhythmics (beta-blockers). It works by acting on the heart muscle to improve the heart's rhythm. Sotalol may cause dizziness, excessive tiredness, headaches, constipation, swelling in the lower extremities, and chest pain. Patients with low potassium or magnesium levels should not use sotalol since these conditions can create higher risk for abnormal heart rhythms with the use of this medication.
