Hemoglobin D
Active
Description
Hemoglobin D (HbD) is a common hemoglobin variant that occurs primarily in north-west India, Pakistan and Iran. Hemoglobin D disease occurs when an individual inherits two copies of the HbD gene. It is a rare and relatively mild disease associated with mild anemia. HbD levels can be detected electrophoretically and compared to the total hemoglobin. HbD Punjab, also known as HbD-Los Angeles, is the most common variant among the HbD variants. Hemoglobins exhibit different migration patterns in alkaline versus acidic electrophoresis conditions. So a combination of 2 procedures can be used in tandem to identify the hemoglobin variants. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
