A species of the genus Saccharomyces, family Saccharomycetaceae, order Saccharomycetales, known as "baker's" or "brewer's" yeast. The dried form is used as a dietary supplement. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
A food, which may result in allergy symptoms in sensitized individuals. Common names include yeast, baker's yeast, and brewer's yeast. S. cerevisiae may induce symptoms of allergy, including allergic rhinitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis, in sensitised individuals. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis has been reported.
