Epicoccum nigrum is a species of fungus. A plant pathogen, it is widespread fungus which produces colored pigments that can be used as antifungal agents against other pathogenic fungi. Epicoccum has been isolated from cereals, fruits, polluted fresh water, compost beds, insects, human skin and sputum. It is a secondary decomposer of plants, soil, paper and textiles and is very common on dying substrates, where abundant sporulation can be observed.
