Article Regenstrief LOINC The genus flavivirus (FV) is a group of single-stranded enveloped RNA viruses whose vectors are mainly ticks and mosquitoes. They are dispersed worldwide and infect as many as 400 million people each year. The FVs that cause neurotropic disease infect the brain and spinal cord leading to serious neurological disorders including meningitis, encephalitis and acute flaccid paralysis. The neurotropic FV include West Nile Virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, tick-borne encephalitis virus, Usutu virus, Ilheus virus, and Zika virus. The visceral disease causing FV can lead to liver failure, hemorrhagic syndromes and vascular damage and include yellow fever virus, dengue virus, and Zika virus. Zika virus is the only FV that infects the human reproductive tract and can be sexually transmitted. If Zika infects a pregnant mother, resulting placental damage can allow the virus to infect the fetus and cause placental insufficiency, microcephaly, congenital malformations, and fetal demise.
