Description
PAX8 is a member of the paired box (PAX) family of transcription factors, which play critical roles during fetal development and cancer growth. PAX8 is a transcription factor for genes exclusively expressed the thyroid cell type, maintaining the functional differentiation of such cell. Defect in PAX8 are the cause of congenital hypothyroidism non-goitrous type 2. PAX8 is also involved in kidney cell differentiation and has been shown to be expressed in three of the most common types of renal cell carcinoma: clear cell, chromophobe and papillary carcinoma.
